General Skilled Migration (GSM) - Australia:
Subclass 175 - Skilled Independent (Migrant) visa
This visa allows you to migrate to Australia if you have good English language skills and have skills and qualifications in an occupation in need in Australia. This visa uses a points test to select visa applicants with characteristics needed in the Australian labour market. You do not require sponsorship to apply for this visa. This visa allows you and any secondary applicants included in your visa application to live as permanent residents in Australia.

This visa is for you if you :

Are under 45 years of age
Have the skills and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

Australian permanent residents can :
  • Live and work in Australia on a permanent basis
  • Study in Australia at school or university
  • Receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
  • Access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
  • Be eligible for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
  • Sponsor people for permanent residence.
Subclass 176 - Skilled Sponsored (Migrant) visa

This visa allows you to migrate to Australia if you have good English language skills and have skills and qualifications in an occupation in need in Australia. You must be sponsored by an eligible relative living in Australia or obtain nomination from a participating State or Territory government agency.   • Have the skills and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

Subclass 475 - Skilled Regional Sponsored (Provisional) visa.
This visa is a three (3) year provisional visa for skilled workers who are unable to meet the criteria for a Skilled - Independent visa. You will have the opportunity to apply for permanent residency after you have lived for two (2) years and worked at least 12 months in a Specified Regional Area of Australia.

This visa requires you to be either :
  • Nominated by a participating State or Territory government agency
  • or
  • Sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area of Australia.

This visa
  • Allows you to remain in Australia for up to three (3) years and requires you to live and work in a Specified Regional Area in Australia
  • Allows accompanying secondary applicants to work and study, but only in a Specified Regional Area of Australia
  • Provides a pathway to permanent residence.

FAQs

What is SIR visa and how is it different from Permanent Residence?
SIR is a skilled independent regional visa. The primary difference between a PR and SIR visa is the latter is a provisional visa of 2 years and the applicant has to live in a regional area during this period. (Regional areas are away from the main cities.) Only after the completion of this period can one apply for PR (permanent residency)

Why it has suddenly become popular?
Immigration to Australia is based on points. One gets points for age, occupation, recent experience, language proficiency, sponsorship etc. Where the pass points for Permanent residency are 120, it is only 100 for SIR visa. This makes many more eligible for migration.

I am PhD in Psychology. Am I eligible?
Eligibility is not based on your degree. It is occupation based, which takes your degree, work history, skills and many more things into consideration.

What are high demand professions in Australia?
The list is quite exhaustive. However, , Civil Engineers, and Tradesmen like welders, fitters, electricians, painters are in great demand.

How long can I stay in Australia under SIR visa?
SIR is a provisional visa of 3 years. You have to stay in regional Australia during the entire period. Only after the completion of this period can you apply for Permanent Residency in Australia.

Can my family come with me to Australia?
Yes. The only condition attached is that all members over 16 years have to write IELTS. The only alternative to this is paying an extra fee to the Australian Immigration Authorities.

Does my spouse' qualification or work experience make any difference?
Yes. This can fetch you 5 points. For this you need to have your spouse' occupation assessed by a relevant body.

How long does it take to process my application?
Processing time for migration to Australia takes 12 to 18 months. This is far less compared to immigration to other countries like U.S, Canada.

Will I get PR after completing the period of SIR visa?
